Course Description
One of the core skills of the civil lawyer is ability to articulate one’s thoughts, legal opinions and conclusions effectively through the medium of writing. Civil proceedings progress by way of filing of appropriate documents at every stage. For effective representation of the client an effective litigator ought to be able to draft pleadings, applications, appeals and other court documents in a precise and comprehensive manner, congruent with the overall parties’ rights and interests, and litigation strategies. A good draft is neither verbose, nor loaded with legalese. One aim of this course is to introduce students to modern standards of legal drafting, moving away from archaic styles. This course will acquaint students with fundamentals of drafting, pleadings and advocacy techniques, through practical experience. In this course the students will be taught five most important types of civil-side documents namely (a) Plaint (b) Written Statement, (c) Interim Relief, (d) First Appeal and (e) Writ. Though there are many kinds of civil-side documents once the student Masters the basic skills, he and she would be able to draft every other Kind of Civil Documents as well.
The Course would involve (a) practical instruction, (b) analysis of sample problems, (c) practical drafting exercise with feedback from the Course Instructor.
Boot Camp Aims:
- 1 To acquaint students with fundamentals of drafting, pleadings and advocacy techniques, with a focus of simplicity and brevity.
- 2 To help students develop adequate theoretical account of substantive law in the context of drafting civil litigation documents.
- 3 To offer students a systematic analysis of well-drafted legal documents.
- 4 To provide practical orientation and develop necessary acumen in drafting legal documents.
- 5 To train students in the art of drafting for courts, various other legal fora, and transactions.
- 6 The basic course aim is to fill the gap in traditional Law School/University education but do not impart any real drafting skill on the students.
